UAlg hosts international conference on sports tourism and sustainable destination management

The University of Algarve ( UAlg ) will host the 10th Conference of the “International Research Network on Sport and Tourism: Sustainable Governance and Destination Management (IRNIST)”, which will bring together internationally renowned experts to discuss the challenges of sports tourism and sustainable destination management.

Promoted by the International Research Network in Sport Tourism (IRNIST), in partnership with the Escola Superior de Educação e Comunicação ( ESEC ) and the Research Centre for Tourism, Sustainability and Well-being ( CinTurs ) at UAlg, this conference is being held for the first time in the Algarve, with the support of the municipalities of Faro, Loulé and Lagos, the IPDJ, the Algarve Tourism Region, among other partner entities.

With speakers from the USA, the UK, Australia, Chile and Portugal, the programme includes case studies such as the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, as well as topics related to strategies for organising and promoting events, adventure tourism, nautical tourism and the promotion of destinations such as the Algarve.

For Elsa Pereira, chair of the event, the organization of the 10th IRNIST Conference at UAlg represents a strategic opportunity for «sharing interdisciplinary knowledge, strengthening national and international collaboration networks, and deepening dialogue with relevant actors from the scientific, technical and political spheres».

The ESEC professor and researcher emphasizes that “this meeting will allow not only the dissemination and valorization of research developed in Portugal and in the world, but also the promotion of young researchers, the exchange of good practices and the identification of new opportunities for cooperation and financing”.

In addition to the planned scientific sessions, the conference will include technical visits and a program of sports and cultural activities.

Elsa Pereira also highlights that holding the event in the Algarve constitutes “an added value for the valorization of the territory, integrating its institutions and communities in a dynamic of innovation, sustainable development and international projection”.

The event is credited for the continuous training of Trainers, Exercise Technicians and Technical Directors, with the allocation of 3.6 credit units.

Registration is still open until July 15th and more information can be requested by email ( [email protected] ).
