Electricity consumption in Russia by 2050 may increase by 30% from the current level, to 1.192 trillion kWh – Ministry of Energy

Electricity consumption in Russia by 2050 could grow by 30% from the current level, reaching 1.192 trillion kWh, said Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pyotr Konyushenko at a press conference at TASS.
The main reasons for this growth are the increase in household energy consumption by citizens, the development of industry, as well as digital services and data centers.
Such growth in consumption will require approximately 50 trillion rubles in investment in the construction and modernization of electric power facilities by 2050, two-thirds of which will go toward developing generation,
The growth in consumption implies an increase in the installed capacity of Russian power plants by almost 40 GW, including 18 GW of wind and solar power plants by 2035, which will account for 5-7% of the country's energy balance compared to 1% today.
P. Konyushenko added that in August 2025, a new competitive selection will be announced for 1.7 GW of renewable energy sources in the Far East, where 0.6 GW are wind and 1.1 GW are solar stations with a deployment date of 2026-27.
In addition, there are plans to connect the Far East with Siberia by 2042 and organize power flows from one energy source to another between time zones.
