Lula calls on the international community

Lula calls on the international community

Speaking at the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) Heads of State Summit hosted by Colombia in the capital Bogota, Lula da Silva stated that they have put forward a model that revitalizes regional cooperation and prioritizes sustainable development.

Recalling that the 30th session of the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference COP will be held in Belen, Brazil, Lula da Silva said, "All summits end with some wanting and others refusing. We are tired of promises; we want to see who will provide the money to keep the forest standing. Brazil has already presented its emissions reduction commitments by 2035."

Drawing attention to the importance of strengthening forest management, water resources and health services, Lula da Silva emphasized the importance of the OTCA Summit in protecting the Amazon forests.

Lula da Silva said the international police cooperation center, which will open in the Amazon region on September 9, aims to strengthen the fight against organized crime and illicit markets.

Bolivian President Luis Arce stated that the OTCA Summit was very productive and expressed their support for a "single and holistic" proposal that would strengthen the voices of society and indigenous peoples.

“AMAZON IS NOT JUST AN ECOLOGICAL ISSUE, IT IS A CULTURAL ISSUE”

Ecuadorian Vice President Maria Jose Pinto emphasized that the Amazon is not only an environmental issue but also needs to be addressed in terms of the role of indigenous peoples, water resources and intercultural relations.
