Siemens Acquires ebm-papst's Industrial Drive Technology

Siemens has acquired the Industrial Drive Technology (IDT) business unit of Siemens ebm-papst to further strengthen its industrial drive technology portfolio. This strategic acquisition further strengthens Siemens’ global leadership in digital factories , automation systems and smart manufacturing technologies .

The new acquisition will also contribute to Siemensopen digital business platform Siemens Xcelerator . IDT’s battery-powered, integrated and intelligent mechatronic drive systems offer innovative solutions, particularly for mobile robots , autonomous transport systems and service vehicles . This gives Siemens access to new market opportunities for more flexible and energy-efficient production processes .

Siemens ebm-papst employs around 650 people at the IDT unit acquired in St. Georgen and Lauf an der Pegnitz in Germany, as well as at the Oradea plant in Romania. All employees have joined Siemens. The new technology portfolio will be integrated with Siemens’ existing automation solutions and will be offered to the global market via the Siemens sales network .

Achim Peltz , CEO of Siemens Digital Industries Motion Control Business Unit, commented on the acquisition:

“The new portfolio strengthens our solutions for smart factories looking to move towards digitalization and automation. Mechatronic drive systems will accelerate the transformation in manufacturing by offering greater flexibility , efficiency and scalability .”

These systems will also play a key role in achieving Siemens' sustainability goals . Energy-efficient and safe production infrastructures can be created thanks to new technologies.

The ebm-papst Group first announced its decision to transfer the IDT unit to Siemens in March 2024. With this acquisition, IDT's global innovation power was integrated into Siemens' existing structure. With this acquisition, Siemens aims to increase its global market share in automation and digital transformation solutions .
