Tüprag Metal Mining Industry and Trade Inc., the Turkish subsidiary of Canadian gold mining company Elderado Gold in Fındıklı , Rize , has begun exploring for new mines in the region. Locals, who consider the new work in the region to be the fruits of the omnibus bill approved in Parliament despite strong opposition, have reacted angrily to the company's employees.
In the morning, teams sent by the company began sampling operations in the Gürculduz and Çamlık plateaus of Çağlayan village. Residents who visited the sampling area stated that they would not allow the plundering of natural areas.
Following discussions between local residents and company officials, the sample stones, which the teams had barcoded, were seized from company officials. It was stated that Tüprag had entered the area without municipal or district governor's permission.
Fındıklı Mayor Ercüment Şahin Çervatoğlu and members of the VİÇEM Environmental Council also visited the area to support citizens protesting the mining activities. They alleged that Tüprag teams had driven their vehicle into the residents. Following the incident, locals went to the police station and filed a complaint, stating that the action was illegal. Following the proceedings at the police station, the people of Fındıklı marched and held a press conference in the square.
