Türkiye set a record for electricity consumption in 2024

Speaking at the opening of the Turkish Wind Energy Congress (TÜREK) in Izmir, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that electricity production broke historic records in July. He noted that monthly production reached 36.7 billion kWh, with daily production peaking at 1,250,178 kWh on July 29th.
Türkiye'S ENERGY GOALSMinister Bayraktar noted that over 30,000 TWh of electricity was produced globally in 2024, noting that Türkiye accounted for 1.1% of global production with 349 TWh that year. He stated that demand is expected to increase by an average of 3.5% annually, reaching 510.5 TWh in 2035 and to reach 1,406 TWh in 2055. He emphasized that external dependency will be reduced with the goal of "Fully Independent Turkey in Energy."
INSTALLED CAPACITY EXCEEDS 120,000 MEGAWATTSBayraktar stated that Türkiye's installed electricity capacity had surpassed 120,000 MW as of the end of July, explaining that 61% of this capacity comes from renewable energy sources. He added that wind and solar power have reached a total installed capacity of 37,118 MW, representing a 31% share of total installed capacity.
$28 BILLION INVESTMENT IN TRANSMISSION INFRASTRUCTUREBayraktar emphasized that transmission and distribution infrastructure will be strengthened to ensure energy supply security, announcing investments in a 14,700 km HVDC line with a capacity of 40 GW and a 15,000 km AC grid. He stated that these infrastructure investments will require approximately $28 billion.
NEW RES AND SPP COMPETITIONS IN 2025Minister Bayraktar announced that a total of 2,000 MW of wind and solar capacity will be allocated for 2025. Wind power plants will be built in Sivas, Balıkesir, Aydın, Denizli, and Kütahya, while solar power plants will be built in Elazığ, Kahramanmaraş, Erzurum, Bolu, Eskişehir, Mardin, and Van.
