Budapest will host the European Geothermal Congress in 2028

Budapest will host Europe’s most significant geothermal event, the European Geothermal Congress (EGC) in 2028, as announced by the Hungarian Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Affairs of Hungary (SARA). The announcement was made in Zurich on the final day of this year’s European Geothermal Congress.
The EGC is the continent’s largest geothermal event, usually attracting over a thousand participants from the scientific, industrial and policy sectors. The event returns to Hungary after 25 years, following its hosting in Szeged in 2003. The bid was put forward by a consortium comprising the SARA, the Hungarian Ministry of Energy and the Hungarian Mining Association.
“We aim to make the efficient and environmentally friendly use of geothermal energy a driving force in Hungary’s green economy,” said Viktor Horváth, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy.
With over 1.1 gigawatts of installed geothermal capacity, Hungary stands as a regional leader in this field. Under the National Geothermal Utilisation Concept, the country could replace up to one billion cubic metres of natural gas each year by 2035 through geothermal energy. This Fall, Hungary hosted the 3rd Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit, the leading geothermal conference in the CEE/SEE region.
