Estonia advances biomethane integration with a new support scheme

Estonia’s Ministry of Climate and the Environmental Investment Centre (KIK) have made a new regulation to promote biomethane injection points, to increase the use of local renewable gas, the Ministry announced.
The proposed regulation is now under consultation. Backed by 2 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund, the new regulation is to fund the design and construction of biomethane injection points. The initiative is mainly targeting companies that produce or plan to produce biomethane in the country.
The proposal aims to establish at least one public injection point, enabling the annual injection of at least 33 gigawatt-hours of biomethane. Each point can serve producers within a 60-kilometre radius. The measure aligns with the “Greener Estonia” policy goal of the European Union’s Cohesion Policy Funds Implementation Plan 2021–2027, contributing to both EU and Estonian climate objectives. The planned scheme has been sent for feedback to market participants and relevant institutions, with responses expected by 24 October. The measure is planned to open for applications in January 2026, with supported investments to be completed by 2029.
“Biomethane is already a vital part of Estonia’s energy sector, and its role will only grow,” said Andres Sutt, Minister of Energy and Environment. “This new measure will simplify the process of feeding biomethane into the gas network, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels while strengthening the local economy.”
