Cooperation agreement about Slovakian pumped storage hydropower plant

The Central Slovakian Water Company, Stredoslovenská vodárenská společnost, signed a memorandum of cooperation with Vodohospodárská výstavba, the operator of hydropower plants, which will ensure professional consultations and effective cooperation in the possible construction of the Málinec – Látky pumped storage hydroelectric power plant. The pumped storage hydropower plant is considered by both parties to be a strategically important project in the field of energy and the most environmentally friendly solution that can compensate for deviations in the electricity system.
According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, Tomáš Taraba, pumped storage hydroelectric power plants are highly economical and represent an important and stable source of income for the state.
The minister cited Austria as an example. “There are 23 pumping stations in neighbouring Austria, mostly in tourist centres and even in national park centres. Since the profits compared to conventional electricity production are three times higher at pumping stations, another 13 pumping stations are currently being built in Austria,” he said.
