Czechia to fund the development of energy communities

Czechia launches a new grant under the KOMUNERG program to facilitate the development of energy communities and support investments in renewable energy sources, according to the Ministry of Environment. One billion Czech crowns (41 million euros) from the Modernisation Fund, financed by the EU emissions trading system, will support projects that produce and share green electricity within communities, with an additional billion reserved if demand exceeds the initial allocation.
The support is set up flexibly; it can be used in the form of a grant or a loan with a maturity of 5 to 10 years, or a combination of both, with the share of own financing amounting to at least 10 per cent of total project costs. The program targets projects implemented within up to three adjacent municipalities with extended powers, or within the city of Prague. Applications will open on 15 December 2025.
Energy communities offer a way to harness local renewable sources and share the generated electricity among members, including municipalities, businesses and households. This helps communities cut energy costs, reduce reliance on central supplies and shield themselves from market price swings. The Platform for Establishing Energy Communities was launched by the ministry last year, and is planned to play a key role in shaping effective community energy systems in the country.
“The provided funds can be used by energy communities for installing various types of renewable energy sources, photovoltaic, wind or biogas power plants and battery storage, as well as measuring and control systems, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, or project preparations,” explained Petr Valdman, Director of the State Environmental Fund.
