EU imported 14.6 billion euros in green energy products in 2024

The EU’s wind turbine imports increased significantly last year, with green energy product imports reaching 14.6 billion euros, according to Eurostat data.
Solar panel imports accounted for 11.1 billion euros, liquid biofuels 2.9 billion euros and wind turbines 0.5 billion euros. The value of solar panel imports dropped 43 per cent from 2023 due to lower prices. Liquid biofuel imports fell 25 per cent in value. Wind turbine imports increased significantly with a 102 per cent rise in value and a 113 per cent increase in weight. The EU imported 32,373 wind turbines, more than nine thousand more than in 2023.
When it comes to exports, in 2024, the EU exported 0.7 billion euros worth of solar panels, 1.8 billion euros in liquid biofuels, and 2.8 billion euros in wind turbines. Unlike solar panels and liquid biofuels, wind turbine exports significantly exceeded import values. From 2023 to 2024, EU wind turbine exports grew substantially, rising 41 per cent in value and 28 per cent in weight. In 2024, the EU exported 17,180 wind turbines, an increase of 7,434 units compared to 2023.
EU’s main import partners were China and India for these products. China was by far the largest supplier of solar panels, accounting for 98 per cent of all imports. The total value of these imports was down from 19 billion euros to less than 11 billion euros in 2024. Imports of wind turbines were mostly from India and China. China remained the leading supplier of liquid biofuel imports to the EU in 2024, though its share dropped to 24 per cent from 36 per cent in 2023. Other key import partners included Malaysia (15 per cent), the United Kingdom (13 per cent) and Brazil (12 per cent).
