Hungary to start talks on buying US nuclear fuel

The Hungarian government, while maintaining its supplier relations with Russia, will also begin consultations on purchasing American nuclear fuel to ensure the secure servicing of the country’s expanding nuclear energy capacity, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in Washington on Wednesday, ahead of his meeting with US Deputy Secretary of Energy James Danly and the Vice President for Government Relations of Westinghouse.
“The operational lifetime of the four reactor units at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant will now be extended, and in addition, two new nuclear units will be built at Paks. (…) With this, we guarantee Hungary’s safe, stable, and reliable energy supply, and we also guarantee that we can preserve the results of the utility cost reduction,” said Mr Szijjártó.
“This marks a major milestone in the development of Hungarian-US cooperation,” he concluded.
Péter Szijjártó and US State Secretary Marco Rubio previously discussed the possibilities for developing Hungarian-US energy cooperation, with a special focus on nuclear energy. The Minister then highlighted Westinghouse’s role in connection with small modular nuclear reactors (SMR).
Can the EU really phase out Russian nuclear fuel? This is the question that Katalin Pócza, Nuclear Energy Expert at the Institute for Energy Strategy, set out to answer.
