Major push for renewable energy: ₹14,147 crore transmission scheme discussed to evacuate solar power from key zones
The project, part of the government’s broader renewable energy expansion strategy, seeks to strengthen transmission infrastructure for integrating solar power into the national grid.
New Delhi: A transmission scheme worth ₹14,147 crore aimed at evacuating solar power from key renewable energy zones in Rajasthan and Gujarat was a central focus of a high-level review meeting held on July 3 under the Project Monitoring Group (PMG) mechanism. The project, part of the government’s broader renewable energy expansion strategy, seeks to strengthen transmission infrastructure for integrating solar power into the national grid. The transmission system will facilitate the evacuation of solar energy from high-potential zones in Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Barmer in Rajasthan, and from Surendranagar, Patan, and Kutch in Gujarat. The scheme includes the development of substations and high-capacity transmission lines aimed at ensuring reliable power delivery from renewable energy-rich regions to consumption centres across India. The meeting also reviewed a total of 22 issues spanning 18 critical infrastructure projects with a combined investment of over ₹36,296 crore in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Officials focused on resolving bottlenecks related to right-of-way (RoW), land acquisition, and inter-departmental coordination to expedite progress. The 5G/4G network expansion project of Reliance Jio, recognised as a project of national importance, was also reviewed during the meeting. The initiative aims to extend 5G mobile services to uncovered and remote areas and enhance existing 4G infrastructure. Discussions were held with the state government to fast-track resolution of forest-related clearances pending for the project.Praveen Mahto, Principal Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), who chaired the meeting, reiterated the Centre’s focus on institutional coordination for timely project implementation. He directed authorities to adopt a proactive approach in clearing hurdles and said, “Private project proponents must actively leverage the Project Monitoring Group (PMG) platform to accelerate implementation.”Mahto also emphasised the need for close collaboration between Central Ministries, State Governments, and private stakeholders to achieve timely and efficient resolution of issues impacting project timelines. The meeting was attended by senior officials from Central Ministries, the Governments of Gujarat and Rajasthan, and representatives of key project developers.
