PJM selects 51 US projects for additional power generation capacity
"The Reliability Resource Initiative (RRI) is a one-time opportunity for shovel-ready resources that have short lead times to construction and operation and can most effectively contribute to reliability," PJM said in a press release.
PJM Interconnection said on Friday it has selected 51 U.S. projects that can be brought online quickly to help provide more than 9,300 MW of reliable electricity capacity under its Reliable Resource Initiative. "The Reliability Resource Initiative (RRI) is a one-time opportunity for shovel-ready resources that have short lead times to construction and operation and can most effectively contribute to reliability," PJM said in a press release. PJM stated that most projects are expected to come online by 2030 while "all are projected to be online by 2031." The grid operator, which operates a competitive market for wholesale electricity in all or part of 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, also stated in the release on its website that the projects mentioned consist of 12 new construction proposals and 31 uprates. The 12 new projects, of which half are gas, five are batteries and one is nuclear, "would contribute 7,253 MW of unforced capacity" and with uprates totaling 2,108 MW of unforced capacity, the combined total capacity addition is expected to be 9,361 MW, PJM added.
