Serbia to host one of Southeast Europe’s largest solar and storage plants

Turkish company Fortis Energy has received the construction permit for a 270 megawatt-peak (MWp) photovoltaic power plant combined with a 72 megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia.
The facility, which already holds a grid connection permit for 180 MW (AC), will be located south of the Sava River, near the village of Drenovac. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026.
It is expected to become one of the largest solar power and energy storage facilities in Southeast Europe. With over 2.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects in development, Fortis is targeting a total installed capacity of 1.2 GW by 2027.

This strategy aims to create an energy model capable of replacing traditional fossil fuel plants by integrating diverse renewable sources – such as wind, solar and biogas – with battery energy storage systems.
