Central Alsace. Underground Hydrogen Storage Project: Environmental Authority Reveals Initial Observations

According to industry experts, global demand for hydrogen could increase tenfold between 2015 and 2050, requiring the creation of new storage capacity. To this end, Storengy, a subsidiary of Engie, is seeking to identify sites for storing hydrogen in saline caverns using leaching, a process that involves injecting water into a borehole that reaches a salt formation to dissolve it and thus create a cavern.
Alsace has significant layers of salt in its subsoil. According to initial data collected by Storengy "based on existing geological and geophysical data," the company states, the area east of Sélestat appears to be favorable.
