The decline in the number of sawmills in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, one of the most dynamic regions in France in this sector, would not worry industry players so much if it were not linked to the chronic problem of global warming. The situation is worrying, and solutions are lacking.

Since 2021, sawn timber production has been declining in the region. Between 2022 and 2023, the latest data recorded, the decline was 3.5%. This is almost entirely explained by the 10.5% drop in the volume of fir and spruce, representing a net loss of 90,000 cubic meters.
