Nature. The Eurasian curlew in need of chicks in the Saône Valley

France is now home to only about 1,000 pairs. For the past thirty years, numbers have been falling in most European countries. This decline is slow, as the species is long-lived, but the insufficient number of young makes it impossible to ensure the next generation. The alluvial meadows of the Saône Valley, from Vesoul to Mâcon via the Côte-d'Or, with the tributaries of the Saône, such as the Grosne and the Seille, are home to between 40 and 50% of the French breeding population. The quality of the habitat and the management practiced are therefore key. To stabilize the population, 0.6 young per year per pair is necessary, while the figure is below 0.1 in the Saône Valley. Since 2021, the OFB , in partnership with the University of La Rochelle and local stakeholders such as the EPTB Saône et Doubs, has been seeking to identify the factors of the decline.
