Only 9% of public places comply with the law requiring the presence of water fountains

A survey conducted by UFC-Que Choisir and No Plastic In My Sea raises concerns about the failure to comply with the obligation to install drinking water points in public establishments since January 2022. As of May 2025, only 9% of them are fully compliant with the law. This is an alarming figure, given that heatwaves have already begun to engulf the country.
"Establishments open to the public (ERP) that can accommodate 301 people or more must be equipped with drinking water fountains," states the official Service Public website, which reminds that a fine of 1,500 euros may be applied in the event of non-compliance with this obligation. This measure, stemming from the AGEC (Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy) law, effective since January 2022, is only partially respected.
