Waterproofing sprays: why experts recommend against using them

Waterproofing sprays: why experts recommend against using them

What is it? This lung irritation is caused by inhaling irritating or toxic substances into the lungs. It manifests with symptoms similar to those of the "early stages of the flu: cough, fever, chills, muscle aches. Breathing difficulties of varying severity then develop and require medical attention," explains the poison control center.

The simplest solution, according to the Swiss Consumer Federation (Fédération romande des consommateurs), is to avoid using these products altogether. Their analysis has revealed their very poor effectiveness. "It's better to keep these nubuck shoes in the closet during rainy weather and opt for leather or synthetic materials," the federation advises.

But if you still wish to waterproof your clothes, follow these few safety precautions:

– Use these sprays only outdoors, with the wind at your back. If this is not possible, use them in a well-ventilated area;

– Spray the product from a good distance away from the face;

– Spray in several stages (do not spray for a long period but in several small bursts);

– Do not use waterproofing spray near a heat source, aquarium, or food. Avoid exposing children and pets;

– Once the clothes or shoes have been treated, let them dry for 12 to 24 hours, outside or in a well-ventilated place.
