In the operations room of the INGV in Naples, the Campi Flegrei are monitored
After about a month of respite, the earth in Campi Flegrei is shaking again. A strong shock, that of 12.47 on Monday, longer than those we have become accustomed to since bradyseism resumed, felt significantly even in the city of Naples. Enough to advise someone to take to the streets. The balance is all in all positive, no significant damage has been recorded and in the end that is what counts, but there was a lot of fear. And it could have been much worse due to the collapse of a ridge in Bacoli, on the islet of Pennata: if no one was involved it is only because, being Monday, the turnout was not what it usually is on weekends. The epicenter of the earthquake was identified in the area adjacent to the Aragonese castle of Baia, in the municipality of Bacoli, at a depth of 5 km. The violence of the shock is certified by its magnitude: 4.6. The strongest since 1983. The same intensity as the earthquake recorded on the night of March 13th that led hundreds of people to spend the night outdoors. No request for intervention reached the fire brigade operations room. The 12.47 shock was the most significant of a swarm made up of at least twelve other main earthquakes, with the strongest earthquake of magnitude 2.2. Precautions were taken immediately: train circulation relating to the Naples hub was suspended as a result of the protocol that provides for a stop in the event of seismic swarms exceeding magnitude 4.0. Except to gradually resume in the following hours. The effects on rail mobility were notable: High Speed, Intercity and Regional trains suffered slowdowns of up to 120 minutes, in addition to limitations and cancellations. Line 2 of the Naples metro also stopped, serving the section that connects the western area of Naples with the terminus in Pozzuoli, with the eastern area of San Giovanni Barra. And trains on the local Cumana and Circumflegrea railways were also stopped until the evening. Among the residents in the Campi Flegrei area, there are those who take it with Neapolitan philosophy and those who almost don't pay attention to it anymore, accustomed as they are to living with the nightmare of an earthquake, but the shock was really scary. "It was strong and lasted longer than usual - reports a resident of Bacoli - the chandeliers were swinging, we heard the walls creaking. Some people ran out into the street. It had been a while since the earthquake was felt, today it made itself felt again. We have to get used to it, it was very scary but here no one gives up". There are many reports on social media: "It was very strong in Naples", writes a Facebook user. "It was also felt in San Giorgio a Cremano", says another. "Strong and long" is the most frequent comment.
From the mayor of Bacoli Josi Della Ragione comes an appeal to act quickly: "It is the most important magnitude shock recorded in Bacoli in the last 40 years. I have heard many times that there is money to do the consolidation work on our coasts. We are waiting for the start of a 10 million euro construction site. But to make our coast safe it will take much more. However, we must start immediately. Promises are no longer enough. We must speed up".
