5G-supported smart transportation infrastructure begins on the highway

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that a critical threshold has been surpassed within the scope of the Central Software Platform Development Project for Cooperative and Smart Transportation Systems, which aims to establish Türkiye's smart transportation infrastructure with domestic and national systems.
Minister Uraloğlu stated, "We have established 5G infrastructure across the entire 40-kilometer route between Istanbul Hasdal Intersection and Istanbul Airport, with installations made at 19 different points." Uraloğlu noted that the system software was developed by Türksat, and stated that with domestic and national solutions, Türkiye will be among the countries with a say in next-generation transportation technologies in the future.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that a significant milestone has been reached within the scope of the Central Software Platform Development Project for Cooperative and Smart Transportation Systems, which will transform Türkiye's transportation infrastructure into a domestic and national smart transportation infrastructure. Uraloğlu explained that the project, implemented in collaboration with the Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication Research Center (UDHAM), the General Directorate of Highways, and Türksat Satellite Communication Cable TV and Operation Inc., stands out as a fully domestic and national R&D effort. He also announced that they have reached a significant stage in the installation of 5G and fiber infrastructure.
40 Kilometer Pilot Corridor
Minister Uraloğlu stated that the pilot area designated for the project is a 40-kilometer corridor between Istanbul Hasdal Junction and Istanbul Airport. He explained that the goal is to maximize traffic safety and comfort on the road, while also significantly reducing travel times. Uraloğlu stated, "We have established 5G infrastructure across the entire 40-kilometer route between Istanbul Hasdal Junction and Istanbul Airport, with installations made at 19 different locations."
Uraloğlu also noted that the system will instantly detect any potential road accidents, stationary vehicles, hidden ice, fallen objects, or lane closures. He said, “Road users will be instantly notified. Cameras, road sensors, AI-based image processing, incident detection, variable message signs, and meteorological information systems will be activated. This will increase the safety of our citizens and enable more effective and efficient use of our road network. Unnecessary waiting on the roads will now be minimized.”
Local and National Central Software Platform Will Be Launched
Uraloğlu emphasized that they take technological advancements and global trends into account when constructing highway infrastructure, emphasizing that they are providing fast and safe road infrastructure thanks to smart and autonomous technologies. Minister Uraloğlu also emphasized that they are continuing to prepare the newly developed infrastructure for autonomous vehicle driving systems. He said, “As we continue to equip our roads with smart transportation systems, which we call the ‘way of reason,’ we are also taking care to ensure that all systems are domestically produced and nationally developed. We will also be commissioning the Smart Transportation Systems (ITS) Central Software Platform and Mobile Application, which will form the software infrastructure for all systems to be installed at the General Directorate of Highways Main ITS Center.”
The Goal of Technological Independence
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that the ITS Central Software Platform and Mobile Application to be established as part of the project will be the heart of the entire system. He added that the platform, developed by Türksat, will analyze data collected from hundreds of sensors using a business intelligence and decision support system, thus maximizing safety and efficiency on highways. Uraloğlu emphasized that citizens will have access to real-time traffic and safety information thanks to the Highways Mobile Application, also developed by Türksat.
A Strategic Step in the Sustainable Transportation Vision
Uraloğlu emphasized that the project is not merely a technology investment, emphasizing that it marks the beginning of a new era for Turkey. He said, “This project is a strategic step that increases safety, offers environmentally friendly solutions, and strengthens our vision of sustainable transportation. Thanks to this infrastructure, implemented with domestic and national resources, our roads will be safer, our travels will be more comfortable, and our country's goal of digital independence will be much more firmly established.”
