Energy is now a security issue

In the bulletin numbered 2025/2 published by the TMMOB EMO Ankara Branch, Electrical Engineer and TAYED Chairman Ali Rıza Öner made assessments regarding the critical stage that energy policies have reached.
Öner emphasizes that the 21st century has made energy resources a critical element not only economically but also geopolitically and militarily. He emphasized that the Russia-Ukraine war and the Iran-Israel tensions demonstrate that energy infrastructure has become a strategic target, saying, "Energy independence is not a choice; it's a policy of survival."
RENEWABLE ENERGY STRATEGIC ADVANTAGEÖner emphasized Türkiye's rich resources, including solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy. He stated, "Local and renewable energy is not only an economic advantage but also a strategic one. However, installation alone is not enough; strong management capacity must be established for sustainability."
MANAGEMENT CAPACITY AND CYBER SECURITYÖner stated that simply building a renewable energy power plant alone won't guarantee success. He emphasized that a robust management infrastructure, from load forecasting programs to the modernization of SCADA systems, is essential not only for efficiency but also for cybersecurity.
STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES AND HYBRID SYSTEMSÖner, reminding that Türkiye's 2035 vision expects a significant increase in installed wind and solar capacity, stated that the grid will be under pressure if technologies such as battery storage systems, pumped hydroelectricity, and green hydrogen are not implemented. He also emphasized the need to integrate small-scale natural gas combined cycle power plants with renewable energy sources to create hybrid models.
BIOGAS AND BIOMETHANE SOLUTIONÖner stated that utilizing agricultural waste and animal residues in biogas power plants would both solve the waste problem and provide a base load power plant operating 24/7, and noted that integrating biomethane into the natural gas network could also reduce external dependency.
ENERGY AND SECURITY ARE INSEPARABLEÖner emphasized that energy policies have become not only an economic but also a matter of national security, saying, “An energy approach that defines its source as domestic, its system as smart, and its goal as independence will be the greatest guarantee for future generations.”
