The EU wants to quickly end fossil fuel imports from Russia.

European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that she will propose legal regulations to member states to more quickly end fossil fuel imports from Russia.

Von der Leyen made a statement on the social media platform of the US-based company X about the sanctions against Russia and fossil fuel imports.

Von der Leyen, who stated that she had a positive phone conversation with US President Donald Trump about increasing the economic pressure on Russia with additional measures, said, “The EU Commission will soon present the 19th sanctions package targeting cryptocurrencies, banks and energy.”

Von der Leyen noted that Russia relies on revenues from fossil fuels and finances attacks on Ukraine in this way, adding, "The EU Commission will propose to accelerate the phasing out of Russian fossil fuel imports to put an end to this."

EU countries are negotiating a legal regulation that would completely ban the purchase of oil and natural gas from Russia by the beginning of 2028.

Before the Russo-Ukrainian War, the EU imported 45 percent of its natural gas and 25 percent of its oil from Russia. These figures declined rapidly with the war.

The EU has so far implemented 18 sanctions packages against Russia due to the war.

In this context, Russia is subject to a wide range of restrictions, including trade, finance, energy including oil and coal, industry, technology, transportation, dual-use and luxury goods, and gold and diamonds.

The sanctions include a ban on shipping crude oil and some petroleum products from Russia to the EU, the expulsion of some Russian banks from the international payment system SWIFT, and the suspension of the activities of numerous broadcasting organizations.
