European Union provides 75 million euros for French wind turbine raft factory

European Union provides 75 million euros for French wind turbine raft factory

The Fos3F factory project envisions a production facility in the Mediterranean town of Fos-sur-Mer. The operator of the facility, and recipient of a €75 million grant from the European Commission, is the construction company BW Ideol. The European Commission, as an institution of the European Union (EU), and BW Ideol have now begun drafting the corresponding contract. The contract is expected to be finalized in the first half of next year, according to the European Commission.

The grant will come from the EU Innovation Fund, and the project has also received the endorsement of the Strategic Technology for Europe Platform (STEP). The factory will be the first to mass-produce the semi-submersible floating squares developed by BW Idol. The technology involves filling the squares with water, the water level of which rises or falls in the opposite direction to wave action. This is intended to dampen the impact of waves on the floating elements. The factory aims to supply floating wind farms in the Mediterranean region, specifically in France, Italy, Spain, and Greece, which, according to estimates, could create a market for eight gigawatts of floating offshore installations by 2043.
