Faro Municipal Library promotes environmental education through reading

The Faro Municipal Library , in partnership with Águas do Algarve , developed the BiblioÁgua project throughout the 2024/2025 school year, an initiative that combines literature and environmental education, promoting an innovative and interdisciplinary approach in the municipality's schools.

The project also had the collaboration of the writer Susana Jorge and her book «Eu sou vida», in which between October 2024 and May 2025, 16 educational sessions were held with 1st cycle classes and one pre-school class, integrating reading mediation practices, interactive dynamics and moments of creative reflection on the theme of water.

The sessions were widely valued by the participating schools, which highlighted the quality of the articulation between environmental and literary content, as well as the enthusiasm demonstrated by the children.

The project culminated with a final exhibition of works at the Faro Municipal Library, between May 26 and 31, 2025, with the presentation of 12 creative productions prepared by the participating classes.

The 2nd C class of the Ria Formosa Basic School 1 was the most voted by the public and had the opportunity to raise the Blue Flag on Faro Beach, on June 13th, and to present a theatrical performance about environmental protection.

Clube da Agulha, through the project “Stories Told, Smiles Shared”, joined the project by making 15 bags and 15 reusable fabric gloves, created as support materials for environmental education actions on the beach, reinforcing the message of sustainability among bathers on Faro beach.

BiblioÁgua stands out as an example of participatory and intergenerational education, mobilizing different areas of knowledge in favor of environmental sustainability, with visible results in the involvement of schools, the enthusiasm of students and the active collaboration of partner entities.
