Category: ENERGY AGENDA , ENERGY EFFICIENCY - Date: October 13, 2025
The Climate Law aims to align economic growth with environmental sustainability through initiatives such as encouraging renewable energy investments and reducing carbon footprints. In this context, the Carbon Markets Congress, Türkiye's first and only Carbon Markets event, was held simultaneously with the 19th EIF Energy Transition Fair. In her opening remarks, CLA Partners Founding Partner, Attorney Çiğdem Dilek, emphasized that this new era, initiated by the climate law, is a significant step toward Türkiye becoming a regional hub for carbon markets.Topics such as the concrete steps taken in Türkiye’s National Emissions Trading System (ETS) journey, the Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (BCDM) as an integral part of the European Green Deal, and international carbon collaborations under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement are now being featured not only in policy documents but also in the strategic plans and investment decisions of the business world.
The impacts of the climate crisis are being felt not only in remote areas but also in overflowing streams in cities, shifting seasonal cycles in agricultural lands, and the resilience of energy infrastructures. In this new era, carbon markets are becoming not only an environmental tool but also a crucial component of economic transformation and competitiveness.
Making the opening speech at the Carbon Markets Congress, Turkey's first and only carbon markets event , CLA Partners Founding Partner Av. Çiğdem Dilek : “As you all know, Turkey's first climate law, which came into effect this year, is a milestone for carbon markets and establishes the framework for the national emissions trading system. The law imposes emission reporting and reduction obligations on companies. The climate law officially declares that carbon pricing will now be implemented in our country. This development is not limited to environmental policies. Because it can also affect exports, we believe it will also enable the emergence of a financing model and influence new economic paradigms. As CLA Partners, we consider it our duty to support our clients in this new system so they can anticipate their risks, manage their liabilities effectively, and take advantage of the opportunities. Carbon markets open the door to both climate targets and new investment opportunities thanks to innovative approaches like Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, border carbon regulations, I-REC certificates, and SAF. We believe that this new era, which began with the climate law, is a great opportunity for Turkey to become a regional hub for carbon markets. We believe that the discussions here will be a great environment for establishing this environment. We believe it will shed light on new developments. At this congress, we will hear important contributions from esteemed representatives from academia, the public, and the private sector on topics such as integrity and growth in voluntary carbon markets, the impact of border carbon adjustments on trade, I-REC certificates, the use of SAF in aviation, and many other topics. At CLA Partners, we believe these discussions will contribute to our country's green transformation and enable us to become a strong player in international carbon markets. We are all working together for a more sustainable and competitive Turkey.
