Road builders are focusing on renewable energy. This is the first such project – a tender has been announced.

The tender covers over 8 hectares of land within the A1 motorway right-of-way, near the Brzeziny junction (Łódź Voivodeship). The lease agreement will be for 29 years , and the lessee will be responsible for constructing the renewable energy installation, along with all associated infrastructure (e.g., energy storage) and transmission, as well as its subsequent operation and maintenance.

The lessee will be obliged to pay rent to the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) and to supply electricity to the road infrastructure within the A1 motorway and national road no. 72. The lessee will be able to sell surplus electricity to external customers.

This is the first pilot project of its kind implemented by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA). The management anticipates that it will allow them to assess market interest in this form of green energy generation and draw conclusions before announcing further similar tenders. Therefore, the GDDKiA has granted all interested contractors until December 22, 2025, to prepare and submit their bids.

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) notes that it first used renewable energy sources in 1999 to power pedestrian crossing lighting, and is currently using them at selected restrooms to power restrooms and associated equipment. It also emphasizes that the road infrastructure on the A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw is to be energy self-sufficient in the future once its expansion is completed. The renewable energy installation, which will be built as part of this investment, will power electrical equipment related to road operation (lighting, weather stations, etc.).
