This will be the largest installation of its kind in Poland. PGE is embarking on a PLN 1.5 billion investment.
  • The Żarnowiec energy storage facility will be one of the largest in Europe.
  • The investment aims to optimise the use of energy from renewable sources and stabilise the power system.
  • The project was awarded a contract in the capacity market auction for 2029.

The warehouse, located next to the Żarnowiec Pumped Storage Power Plant belonging to the PGE Group, will be one of the largest battery storage facilities in Europe.

"Optimal utilization of installed renewable energy capacity requires the parallel operation of storage facilities, which will accumulate energy during periods when production exceeds current demand. PGE's new investment in the Żarnowiec energy storage facility addresses these needs. It will not only contribute to increased power system regulation but will also balance the energy generated by wind farms, both onshore and offshore," says Dariusz Marzec, CEO of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.

He emphasizes that the development of energy storage facilities such as the one in Żarnowiec or the next one planned in Gryfino will enable more efficient operation of renewable energy sources and will reduce energy prices for consumers.

The Żarnowiec battery energy storage facility will be located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, near PGE's future offshore wind farms and Poland's largest pumped-storage power plant in Żarnowiec, owned by PGE Energia Odnawialna, which will also be responsible for supervising the construction of this storage facility.

Earlier, in December 2024, the energy storage facility in Żarnowiec was awarded a contract in the capacity market auction for 2029.
