Global electric vehicle sales reached 9.1 million in the first half of the year

UK-based research organization Rho Motion announced electric vehicle sales data for June and the first half of the year.
Accordingly, electric vehicle sales in June increased by 24 percent compared to the same month last year and by 7 percent compared to the previous month.
In the first half of this year, 9.1 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide, a 28% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
China's leadership in electric vehicle sales was evident in the first half of the year. Of the total electric vehicles sold globally during this period, 5.5 million were registered in China. Consequently, electric vehicle sales in China grew by 32% year-over-year between January and June.
Although news that subsidies for electric vehicles would be removed in some Chinese cities led to expectations of a slowdown in the country's market, sales continued to increase.
Strong growth in electric vehicle sales is expected to continue in the country as more financing becomes available in the second half of the year.
Electric vehicle sales in Europe increased by 26 percent in the first half of the year, reaching 2 million.
While the rise in electric vehicle sales continued in Spain, Germany and the UK, sales in France fell by 13 percent due to the reduction of subsidies.
Sales in North America are trending down In North America, which encompasses the US, Canada, and Mexico, sales growth slowed to 3% in the first six months of the year, with 900,000 electric vehicles sold in the region. Sales in Canada fell 23% during this period, while sales in Mexico and the US grew by 20% and 6%, respectively.
After US President Donald Trump signed into law what he described as the “Big Beautiful Bill” on July 4, tax breaks for new, used and commercial electric vehicles under the Inflation Control Act, which had been enacted during the previous president’s term, were withdrawn.
Some electric vehicles sold in the US this year were eligible for these tax breaks. Therefore, while an increase in electric vehicle sales is expected in the country before the tax breaks are repealed on September 30, 2025, a sharp decline in demand is expected in the final quarter of the year.
In the rest of the world, electric vehicle sales grew by 40 percent in the same period, reaching 700,000.
Price-sensitive drivers consider subsidies Rho Motion Data Manager Charles Lester commented on the data, stating that China and Europe are rapidly progressing in the electric vehicle transformation.
Pointing out that one in two electric vehicles worldwide is sold in China, Lester said, “Nearly half of new vehicles sold in China are electric. Despite some concerns about subsidies, we expect this strong electric vehicle sales trend to continue throughout the year. While growth in Europe has been strong, it has not been evenly distributed across the region. The UK and Germany are leading the way, while France lags behind. Highly price-sensitive drivers are still dependent on subsidies.”
Lester emphasized that North America, especially Canada, has seen a slowdown in electric vehicle sales this year, saying, “With Trump’s recent cuts with the Big Beautiful Act, it may be difficult for the US to see any growth in the electric vehicle market overall in 2025.”
